What are the benefits of training in karate?
Karate is a self-defence fighting system. Karate is a way of life. We are learning a martial art, to build strength in both mind and body, and yet we wish to never have to use the physical component of the art to defend ourselves. Consistent training in karate can develop strength of mind, body, spirit. By developing fighting skills, you build confidence, inner security, awareness, respect for self and others. Karate training builds character, it teaches us life skills to help us to overcome challenges, solve problems, embrace opportunities, strive for excellence. There are no pre-requisites except a willingness to give it a go! You don’t need to be young, you don’t need to be fit, you don’t need to be flexible. Every student is encouraged to participate to their own ability and at their own pace.
What makes Kanzen Karate different?
The journey is taken over seven stages of development. The Black Belt is only achieved only on reaching towards the last stage. You need to attend classes to understand the stages, however it is noted that they progress through developing your own disposition and safety, through to fighting spirit and returning to peaceful assertiveness, serenity, the void. The stages are:
Default Shape.
Fundamental Footwork and Dominance.
Defensive Pattern.
Defend and Counter.
Distance and Angle Control.
Creative Control.
Dominant Presence.
Techniques are developed through repetition and good training habits and ‘kaizen’. You will become physically stronger through the rigours of the training and will develop the confidence of psychological superiority. As a traditional school, we work on Kihon, Kata and Kumite, but we trust the teaching of Mas Oyama when he says:
The heart of our karate is real fighting.
There can be no proof without real fighting.
Without proof there can be no trust.
Without trust there can be no respect.
This is a definition in the world of Martial Arts.
